Carotenoid Extraction from Locally and Organically Produced Cereals Using Saponification Method

Carotenoids are important phytochemicals contributing nutritional health benefits in the human diet, with a significant contribution from cereals as one of major food component around world. Different methods have been described and adopted for extraction isolation carotenoid compounds. Saponification can be seen an option it converts retinol esters to removes other abundant compounds such triglycerides. Extraction carotenoids content locally adapted organic limitedly investigated was, therefore, evaluated present study, specific aim understand genotypic local cultivation effects interactions. Therefore, 17 diverse cereal genotypes origin were grown organically four localities composition by HPLC. The results showed large variation genotypes, lutein dominating type wheat rye, while zeaxanthin was barley. High-level values (9.9 mg/kg total carotenoids) similar highest previously reported types wheat. barley relatively high stability within between locations, interactions found location rest indicating their adaptation. adaptation contributes opportunities production value, highly nutritious products, direct value these conventional plant breeding varieties performing over broad environmental ranges, more limited.
